TANZANIA
Tanzania, with an extension of 945.000 km2 that includes
the Zanzibar Archipelago, is the largest country in South-oriental
Africa. Tanzania shares borders with Kenya and Uganda to
the north, with Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic
of Congo to the west, with Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique
to the south, and with the Indian Ocean to the east.
Tanzania has a population of 40.454.000
people. A forth of the population lives in the cities and
life expectancy is 52,5 years.
THE
PROBLEM
Tanzania, in spite of being one of the most beautiful
and wild countries in Africa, carries the burden of a hard
reality:
Poverty and disease cripples the population, especially
in rural areas and in the city outskirts, whereby slowing
the development of the country.
The AIDS virus is nowadays one of the greatest threats for
the Tanzanian population.
Children suffer the consequences the most.
A great number of children have lost their parents, their
love, their assistance and all access to an education. Moreover,
the population and even their relatives reject these
children for being orphans and for the burden they
mean to those still alive. Most of these children end
up in the streets, marking them for life in a psychological
as well as a physical level.
